Goosen (Gosen) van Valkenburg (1759 – after 1802)

Generation 1 · Van Valkenburg – Graham Family Project

Early Life (1759 – 1780s)

Born and baptized 4 March 1759 in the Oude Kerk, Amsterdam, son of Lambert van Valkenburg of Haarlem and Maria van der Hoven, a “jongedochter van Amsterdam.” Goosen’s baptism entry places the family firmly in Amsterdam and marks the mid-18th-century Haarlem → Amsterdam migration of the Van Valkenburgs. His father appears in marriage records as a “jongeman van Haerlem,” confirming the civic origin of this branch.

Marriage and Family (1785 – 1802)

On 14 May 1785 Goosen entered ondertrouw with Petronella Jacobse van Veen (bapt. 12 Apr 1761 – bur. 15 Apr 1802) at the Oude Kerk, Amsterdam; the marriage was solemnized 15 June 1785. Witnesses were Lambert van Valkenburg (father of the groom) and Jacob van Veen (father of the bride). This union joined two long-standing Amsterdam burgher families.

Children from this marriage include:

  • Jan Jacob van Valkenburg (bapt. 28 Mar 1790 Amstelkerk Amsterdam – d. 29 Dec 1844 Leeuwarden), apotheker and industrial precursor.
  • Gerretie van Valkenburg (bapt. 1794 Amstelkerk Amsterdam).

After Petronella’s death in 1802, Goosen remarried Anna Maria Frijerkes on 30 July 1802 (ondertrouw record Amsterdam). Surviving entries place the family in the western canal districts among artisan and merchant households.

Occupation and Standing

Although no occupation is explicitly listed, context suggests a craft or mercantile profession within the educated burgher class — akin to the apothecary and chemical trade his descendants pursued. Parish records locate him in the Amstelkerk quarter populated by middling tradesmen and medical dealers.

Later Life (after 1802)

Documented alive in 1802 at his second marriage; no death act yet located. He likely died in Amsterdam in the early 19th century. Further research should examine the Notarial Archives (Stadsarchief Amsterdam) for probate or estate records.

Legacy and Significance

Goosen represents the genealogical pivot linking the Haarlem burgher Van Valkenburgs to the Amsterdam and later Leeuwarden industrial lines. Through his son Jan Jacob, the family transitioned from craft guilds to apothecary and industrial enterprise, laying the foundation for Samuel Draisma van Valkenburg (1830 – 1894) and subsequent generations.
